  1. 1890-1945. Austrian poet, dramatist, and
  2. novelist, a leading Expressionist. His works

  4. Gerichtstag'/`The Day of Judgment' 1919; the
  5. plays Juarez und Maximilian 1924, and Das
  6. Reich Gottes in Bohmen/The Kingdom of God in
  7. Bohemia 1930; and the novels Verdi 1924 and
  8. Das Lied von Bernadette/The Song of
  9. Bernadette 1941. Born in Prague, he lived in
  10. Germany, Austria, and France, and in 1940
  11. escaped from a French concentration camp to
  12. the USA, where he died. In 1929 he married
  13. Alma Mahler, daughter of the composer Gustav
  14. Mahler.
